As part of my secondary art education program, I needed to go back and take some ceramic classes. I'm learning the basics of ceramics and have had fun experimenting a bit. This is my first attempt at a pinch pot and decided to try incorporating some Minnesota themed relief sculpture around it,. I'm really excited to move beyond pottery and learn more about the sculptural processes of working with clay. This pot will eventually be fired and glazed for a grade.

Although I haven't done much in the way of wildlife paintings over the past twenty years, it is an area where my first interests in art were developed as a kid. I still really enjoy wildlife subjects.

These are a few paintings that I had the opportunity to do for the new Pocatello Children's Clinic. The monocramatic Idaho symbol paintings are each 30x30 and are done with acrylic on canvas. (My first attempt with acrylics). The tree murals were a big experiment for me. They were done in latex.

We sure are grateful to our doctors and nurses. They have been a huge blessing for our family over the years. Thank you Dr. Murdoch, Dr. Perry, Abby, and even several who are not actually our own doctors, such as Dr. MacInterff. You've all consistently gone well above and beyond your call of duty in demonstrating the value of bedside manner in medicine. We love, respect, and appriciate each of you!

This is one of two paintings going down to the Sears Dixie Invitational in St. George, UT. I used my Dad as a model and "inspiration" for this painting. I don't think I've ever really used that phrase before, but in this case, it really is more or less a portrait of him as I think he would have been 100 years ago. Not only by the fact that he has always been our literal caretaker, but I think if he lived somewhere around 1900, this is something he would be doing - taking his lamp out to start working before the sun came up and then taking a break from his simple breakfast to study his scriptures in a quiet place. Thanks for all you do, Dad! Love you!

This is a painting that I've been planning and working on for a long time that has involved several interesting challenges for me. Aside from the fact that I've never painted a biblical interior before, the low angle, overall subtle dark lighting with both warm and cool light sources and shadows has been been a fun learning experience. The layout and drawing has changed several times and will continue to change a bit as I paint along with the overall values and color temperatures. It's been a slow process of working in one area for a little bit and then moving around into other areas to try and tie it all together. It's always tempting to jump into certain detailed areas too soon.

Here's a few of the characters I designed and painted for the Jefferson Cougars. My client requested a boy cougar and a girl cougar character that would be considered both cute and "cool" to Elementary School age kids and to have each of them doing a variety of school activities. (The Norman Rockwell "copy" was my favorite as I was able to add a few of my own personal studio elements into the image.) There was a total of twelve panels in all. The individual panels shown above were each 6ft. x 4ft. and the large stage panel shown below was 6ft. x 18ft. They were painted with latex on prepped osb sheathing.

How to Draw a Horse Step by Step Experiment

Yesterday, while I was home fighting the flu with the kids, I noticed a job posting for an artist needed to draw a horse in successive steps that could be used as part of a tutorial. As a kid, I really enjoyed the "Draw 50" series of books along with several other how to draw books that my parents got for me throughout my younger years. As time went on, I slowly developed my own methods for mapping out and modeling my drawings, but I have never taken the time to photograph my drawing each step of the way. I thought this would be a fun experiment to try out yesterday. It is kind of interesting to see it broken up like this. Of course, this is a rough quick sketch, but it gets the point across. And so, here it is....As my kids would say as I make the grand unveiling: "DUNN-DA-DA DAHHHHHHHH!" And as my wife would, and did say..."Um, why did you draw his bum?"

* (I've just been corrected. She said "bottom". Not "bum"). My bad. Please don't infer that in anyway because of my misquotation that my sweetie could or ever would use such crass language. It's just not in her nature.

Although I developed a love of painting people while attending college, I've had an interest in painting wildlife since I was a little kid. My interest in painting people has definately been my main focus for the past thirteen years, however, for about ten years, I really wanted to take a break and revert to my childhood interests by finishing a nice painting to enter into the "Arts for the Parks" international show which showcases paintings depicting various scenes and wildlife of the many U.S. National Parks. Each year, however, I would find myself heavily involved in other projects around the time of the deadline and consequently, never had anything ready for the show. Then, sadly, a couple years ago, I noticed that the show would no longer be taking place. My disappointment turned around however, when I found that a similar show, "Paint the Parks", was being instituted with the same type of theme and organization. They take the top 100 juried paintings from those submitted and they travel to various locations around the country. It's been a fun show to look forward to over the past couple of years and this year I finally had two small paintings ready for the deadline and submitted them for the "Mini 50" show. This Mini 50 show travels with the Top 100, however it involves smaller paintings, and they only select the top 50 to join the show. I was pleasently suprised and honored to have one of my two entries "Emerging Blue Shadow", selected for the "Top 50" and my second painting, "Steam and Reflections in Yellowstone" was selected into the "2nd 50". I hope to have some larger scale paintings ready for next year, but for now I'm thrilled to finally be a part of the show! It's first destination is Kolob Studio, Grand Canyon, AZ. My wife and I have discussed the possibility of using the new studio space to offer art lessons and after talking with a few people, I've gotten really excited about it. I'm still hammering out all the details, but at this point, I'm thinking of offering a few different classes.

1. CLASS FOR YOUNGER ARTISTS (Ages 11 and up. $30/month. One hour class held each week.) - This is a class that I'd love to do simply because this is the age I started to realize I could draw and paint things fairly realistically. Kids have a great ability and willingness to try new things and have a natural desire to be creative. Unfortunately, I won't be able to form a class for elementary school aged kids at this point, but it may be a possibility in the future. I believe art is such an important subject for kids of all ages and I know many of them miss out on these opportunities because they aren't offered them in their regular school courses or they have to choose between Art, Music, etc. This class will be a lot of fun and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'd like to try two adult classes:

2. DRAWING ($65/month. Two and a half hour class held each week.) - This class would involve instruction and practice with several different drawing mediums and methods. I think this is the adult class that I'm most excited about because it seems to be like so many other things in that it "always comes back to the basics". I can't paint the way I'd like to paint without first being comfortable with my drawing skills. I can't maintain my drawing skills without constant practice. When it comes comes right down to it, drawing, for me, is the most fun and relaxing thing I do in art. I'd like to draw from "life" (direct observation of the actual subject rather than other methods - i.e. using photos) as much as possible. Subjects may vary, depending on class interest, but I think eventually, I'd like to bring a model in and cover some of the basics of portrait drawing.

3. OIL PAINTING ($65/month. Two and a half hour class held each week.) - This class would cover many of the basics of oil painting such as value, color mixing, and paint application techniques. We may also do some monochromatic (single color) studies to practice using the brush and improve drawing skills. Again, I'd like to work from life as much as possible using a variety of different subjects, which may vary with the class interest. These subjects might involve setting up a still life in the studio, bringing in a model for a portrait study, or taking our paints outside to paint a landscape. These types of life studies may seem a bit daunting to those who have never tried it, but I guarantee, it is some of the very best practice you can get!

DISCOUNTS are offered for multiple family members signing up or for individuals taking more than one class.

O.K., so here's my life study posting for this week. Last fall, while visiting my parents, my mom sent me home with several small frames she's collected over the years. I thought this was a neat little frame that needed some kind of fruit or vegetable to fill it. As I stood in the grocery store this morning trying to figure out what to paint, looking at all the different varities of apples, I thought it might be fun to graduate the colors in them from green to red. I guess the orange is just kind of a silent observer.

One of the reasons I considered putting a blog together was to create an incentive for myself to be a little more dedicated to keep up with my regular life studies. I hope to post a study on a weekly basis in between my regular projects. These "life studies" are typically done on a very short time frame (3 hours) and don't generally share the same "finished" quality that some other paintings might have. However, due to the nature of how they're painted, they typically have their own appealing qualities. They also provide invaluable practice for me for those times when I am required to work from photos. These "life" studies might include anything I observe and paint from directly without the use of photos, whether it's a person, a piece of fruit, or a piece of cardboard. This helps to train my visual memory and provides a much more accurate reference for color and values than I could possibly get from photographs. It also encourages me to paint more quickly and accurately than I generally would do otherwise.

This first sketch is one that I did recently in a weekly painting session with a group of artists I try to meet with each Monday morning. Thanks to Daneane Taysom for consistently scheduling models for us and to Kathy Torgeson for all the cool costume pieces. I learn a lot from painting with these two as well as Dave Story, Ken Spencer, Barrett Shuman, and Anne Merkley. Look for each of their work!

Biography

Dan was raised in Minneapolis, MN, where from an early age he was provided with the necessary support and opportunities he would need to develop his skills as an artist. At the age of eleven, he was enrolled in an art edjucation course and he continued to draw and paint with watercolors throughtout his Jr. High and High School years. After serving a mission for the LDS Church, he accepted scholarships to study Fine Art at Dixie College under Del Parson with a focus primarily on portraiture and the human figure. He then accepted scholarships to study illustration under Perry Stewart at Southern Utah University. Since that time, he has completed illustrations for Ensign, Liahona, New Era, The Friend, Signs of the Times, and Listen Magazines. His work has also been used in sessions of LDS General Conference to illustrate talks presented by Presidents Thomas S. Monson and James E. Faust of the First Presidency of the LDS Church. He had work included in The Old Testament for LDS Families, (published by Deseret Book) as well as Teaching's of the Prophets: Joseph Smith, and had a painting on display in the Washington DC Temple's Visitor Center as part of a collection gathered to commemorate Black History Month in February 2006. Other clients have included Southern Virginia University, Adoption LLC, as well as numerous portrait clients from around much of the U.S. Since 2003, he has participated in the Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show (held in St. George, Utah) and the Shenandoah Invitational Art Show (Buena Vista, Virginia) where he has consistently received awards for his oil paintings and pastel work including the Shenandoah Invitational's People's Choice Award in 2005, and again in 2008. While participating in these shows, Dan has had the honor of displaying his paintings along side the work of several other artists whom he's admired for many years including: Greg Olsen, Del Parson, Walter Rane, Joseph Brickey, Michael Malm, and Sam Lawlor.
